Greeting on the International Labour Day (May Day) from Ektara, the online platform on shared history, heritage and arts. One of our aims is to promote peace and communal harmony in India and the world. Ektara magazine has been running since January 2016. Your support will keep us floating.

1. Yakum Mai, Yaum-e mazdoor: Urdu poetry on Labour Day
Sadia Wahidi reads selections from the verses of various Urdu poets on the Labour Day or Yaum-e Mazdoor.

2. Cinema Qawwali Archive
We are very happy to announce the online launch of the archive on cinema qawwalis, featuring over 650 songs dating from 1939 to 2022. Supported by India Foundation for the Arts. http://cineqawwali.in


3. Madan Bala Sindhu, a Punjabi singer no more
Madan Bala Sindhu, a popular singer of Punjabi folk songs passed away in Delhi on 23 April, 2023. She was also a renowned actress in Punjabi and Urdu musical theatre and was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to the folk music of Punjab. Here is a rendition of Amir Khusrau's folk song 'Amma more baba ko bhejo ri' by her troupe. Recorded by Iffat Fatima and Yousuf Saeed.


4. Featured video: The crossroads of human evolution (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka): A short documentary on the anthropology of South Asia by Stefan Milo.
