A very happy new year 2019!
With great pleasure we announce that Ektara magazine completes three years. Ektara is an online platform of history, society and culture of India and South Asia. We hope our video stories and interviews will entertain and inspire you, and arouse your appetite for more about our rich and diverse pasts. Ektara magazine comes out once every two months. We need your support to keep it running.

1. A tribute to Prof. Mushirul Hasan: at a workshop on Music and Partition

Historian of modern India, Prof. Mushirul Hasan passed away on 10 December 2018 at New Delhi. Ektara presents short excerpts from a 2-day workshop on 'Hindustani Music and Partition' held at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, on 22-23 August 2008, where Prof. Hasan, the then-Vice Chancellor of the university, inaugurated the conference.

2. Women in India's History: Resources on the Internet

3. 'Reason' - trailer of a new documentary film by Anand Patwardhan
In what is perhaps his most urgent and thorough exploration of Indian society yet, renowned documentarian Anand Patwardhan charts India's slide away from secular democracy and toward divisions of power, caste, and religious belief, and the violence that has followed. 4. Tasveer Ghar
: New design and Image search facility

Tasveer Ghar, the online archive of South Asian popular visual culture that completed ten years of its existence, is being relaunched in a new design avatar, with a new Image Search facility where you can view thousands of images from our collections of popular art.

5. Featured video: Curry Around The World - The Spice Of Life - BBC
"When the British left India they took home the memory of delicious Indian food in packets of mixed spices hoping they would be able to reproduce it. It was called curry powder". A BBC programme about how the taste of India enlivens cuisines around the world. This video was produced in 1983.
